Front page 서문에서 맨 앞장

      An elegant debut? Hardly! 우아하게 데뷔했다고? 천만에!


       "I find that most amusing, don't you?" "난 가장 재밌는 거라고 생각하는데, 넌 어떻게 생각해?"
        "Not really," I said, and spilt my chocolate on her. 난 "전혀 그렇지 않아"라고 대답하며 내가 먹던 초콜릿을 그녀에게 쏟고 말았다.
She dropped the chocolate pot, which instantly became the drabbest earthenware bowl imaginable, and overset her chair as she leapt to her feet, slapping at the dark stain on her dress, which rapidly spread to her hands. 놀란 그녀는 초콜릿이 담겨있던 병을 떨어뜨렸고 그 순간 도자기 그릇은 예상했던대로 아주 칙칙하게 변해버렸다. 그녀는 갑자기 놀라 일어서면서 의자를 뒤엎었고 초콜릿은 그녀의 드레스로 튀어 얼룩져 버렸다. It seemed to burn her, for she kept jumping and slapping. 그녀가 계속 뛰어다니면서 때리는 행동은 마치 그녀가 화난사람처럼 보이게 했다. The pins and needles vanished. 안절부절하던 느낌이 갑자기 사라졌다. I swept my skirts up and found I was able to get to my feet and run, stumbling and gasping, for the little door. 나도 문간에서 치마에 쓸려 비틀거리며 숨을 헐떡였다. It was latched but not locked, thank goodness, and I slammed it to behind me, then leaned against it to catch my breath. 다행히도 문은 잠겨있지 않았다. 하지만 문은 걸쇠로 걸려있었다. 난 내 등뒤로 문을 닫아버렸고 바로 기대 숨을 골랐다. And realized every onlooker in the hall was staring, for I had slammed the door at the very height of the smallest choirboy's solo. 내가 소년 성가대원의 아주 가늘고 높은 목소리처럼 문을 닫자 모든 구경꾼들이 날 쳐다보고 있다는 사실을 깨달았다. 
    I don't need to tell you the rest, do I? 자 이제 나머지는 여러분의 상상에 맡겨야 겠어요.

픽션이기에 약간씩 이해가 가지 않는 부분이 있지만 이제 본문에 들어가면 좀 더 나아지리라 믿는다. ^^
